Trinity’s Book Review

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! By Dr. Seuss

What do you like about this book? It explains love.  It has a sparkly cover and you can read it any day, not just Christmas.  It rhymes and has tongue twisters.  It’s really cool.  Also, the illustrations are peachy-red and black and the Whos are really cute.

What do you do when you don’t know a word? Skip it.

Share with me a bit about the story.  The Grinch tries to take Christmas.

How do you feel about the Grinch? If I was a Who I would be sad if he took our Christmas because we’ve been waiting for Christmas.

Where do you like to read? On the chair.

What do you like about reading? You can take it wherever you go.  Once you have a story, it’s in your mind and you can take it with you.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is one of Dr. Suess’s most classic children’s books (out of the forty-six he wrote).  The author did all the illustrations and wrote in rhymed verse.  Some argue the book criticizes the commercializing of Christmas, but as Trinity said, it is a story that ‘explains love’ and that is hard to criticize.

Rhyming books are incredibly important for young readers, and parents and teachers can find ways to tie such books (maybe not one quite so holiday-specific) into curriculum or daily life. The writing itself is quite sophisticated and playful, elevating the level of reading, and can help young writers in developing their craft as well.
