  • to depart in a sudden and secret manner, especially to avoid capture and legal prosecution
  • cognate (common etymological origin) with sconce (a type of light fixture).
 (Not So) Fun Fact:  The word abscond is often used in medical writing to note a patient who fled a medical or psychiatric institution.
